Thomas’s believes in the benefits of learning beyond the classroom, recognising that outdoor education offers children unique opportunities and experiences which cannot be taught within the constraints of the school day and surroundings. We believe that every pupil should enjoy a broad range of outdoor learning experiences during their school careers.
We will provide pupils with regular, frequent, challenging, enjoyable and safe opportunities to learn outdoors. These have a positive impact on pupils’ wellbeing, making Thomas’s a happier and stronger community. The Thomas’s Outdoors team are outdoor education specialists, based at our Putney Vale site. They have direct access through a ‘magic door’ to Wimbledon Common and an exciting outdoor world. The team has highlighted five areas of outdoor learning which, along with Thomas’s values, underpin teaching: personal and emotional development; organising, planning and risk management; group development; learning from nature and physical literacy. We aim to equip pupils with essential life skills which they will need to succeed in our rapidly changing world. We hope that they will also have fun, make memories and build friendships which will last a lifetime.
